Phew - Finale / Urahara 7" (Pass Records, 1980)

Tracklisting

Side A
終曲 (Shuukyoku, trans. "Finale")

Side B
うらはら (Urahara, trans. ???)

1st solo recording by Phew (Hiromi Moritani), formerly of no-wave group Aunt Sally, on the essential Pass Records label (PAS-203). Ryuichi Sakamoto, helming the mix, does brilliant work here, especially on the fractured "Urahara", replete with discordant piano, plink-plonk synthwork (reminiscent of his B-2 Unit LP), and Phew's inimitable deadpan chant. No doubt this is what caught the ear of Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit, who would later join her on her follow-up LP.

Great record! But it seems that Phew wasn't so pleased with the result of this collaboration. That's why she decided to work with Can members. Hard to verify if this is true or not though..

megane-kun: thanks for the info. well, who wouldn't jump at the chance of having your first solo LP include one of the most powerful rhythm sections OF ALL TIME? can't say i personally find any fault in sakamoto's production though....

ikebukuro: i'm happy that you visited. i hope you'll stick around!

hi. great blog. seriously. i havent even heard any of the stuff youve uploaded yet (downloading a couple now), and i guess a fair amount will probably not be to my liking, but i'm hoping i'll find something that coincides with my tastes. but, really, fascinating either way... opened up a whole world of new artists to me. thanks

and i only came here searching for info about mariah...

oh, and also (yes, its me again, the same "anonymous") any chance you have (or failing that, have heard) an LP by a female singer called Takami collaborating with a synth guy called Pnuema? It may actually suck, but ive been wanting to hear this album for some time and can find almost no info on the net (in english). even just some info or a review would be really appreciated. thanks

Yeah, I hope you find some stuff you like! I'll be posting some more Yasuaki Shimizu / Mariah stuff sometime soon.
I think the album you are referring to is "Tenshikou - Y de Noir II (天使行)". I do have that. It's really wild, not very much like I expected. Extremely cosmic! I'll upload that for you soon.
